Visiting Your Metal Finisher Matters: How On-Site Collaboration Strengthens Our Partnerships

October 2, 2025

Every link in the supply chain plays a critical role in today’s high-stakes, high-precision manufacturing environment. Whether you’re machining critical components for the aerospace industry or building complex assemblies for the defense sector, there’s one partner you can’t afford to overlook: your metal finisher.

Often the last step in your supply chain, your metal finishing supplier can make or break your project. That’s why, here at Global Metal Finishing, we believe that true partnership comes from understanding our procedures and how they fit into your processes. And there’s no better way to understand our work than with a shop visit.

Why Every Manufacturer Should Visit Their Metal Finisher

Machine shops operate in a world of tight tolerances, highly technical specifications, and strict timelines. They can have everything under control in their own facility, but sending parts out for secondary processes can introduce uncertainty. For full visibility into your manufacturing supply chain, going on-site to your vendors (including your metal finisher!) is a great place to start.

At GMF, we’ve been fortunate to visit several of our customers’ facilities to see their process and better understand the challenges they face. We get insight into what is absolutely critical to their work, which in turn helps us do our job better. That’s why we encourage our customers to do the same.

When shops visit our facility in Roanoke, Virginia, they gain a deeper appreciation for the complexity, chemistry, and care that goes into our metal finishing services, from chemical conversion, paint and primer application, and hardcoat anodize to the passivation of stainless steel

What to Expect During a Tour of Global Metal Finishing

Our team loves hosting customer visits, whether it’s for vendor qualification or simply to open our doors to those curious to learn how we operate. Here’s what a typical visit to GMF looks like:

1. Warm Welcome and Introductory Meeting

When you arrive at our shop, you’ll be greeted by one of our friendly team members. Because we serve many machine shops and handle classified parts, we begin by having visitors sign an NDA. Additionally, we have guests sign in for AS9100 and fire code purposes.

From there, we head into a conference room to discuss our collaboration, asking questions like:

  • What are your pain points?
  • What are you hoping to achieve?
  • What do you need from your metal finisher?
  • Have you had issues with a supplier in the past? How can we prevent this from happening again?

2. Shop Tour

Next, we guide visitors through all three of our buildings, including:

  • Our on-site wastewater treatment system, which showcases our environmental responsibility and technical rigor
  • Our in-house lab, where we maintain strict controls for each of our chemical processes
  • Our processing lines, where the transformation really happens. This includes our anodize, hardcoat anodize, chem film, passivation, and electroless nickel plating lines, as well as our paint booth and curing oven. Visitors get a firsthand look at the chemical processes that give each part its precise finish.
  • Our racking and masking areas, where our team interprets blueprints to ensure proper coating, contact points, tolerances, and processing requirements.
  • Our dry-to-pack, final inspection, and shipping departments, so customers can witness just how precise and intentional these steps are

Our customers are often surprised by how complex these processes really are when they see them up close and in person. Many visitors have told us that they did not expect our procedures to be quite so labor-intensive and customized.

The Benefits of In-Person Collaboration

Visiting your metal finisher is a critical move in enhancing your partnership and strengthening your supply chain. Here’s what you gain:

Clarity and Confidence

We’ve never had a customer leave our facility who wasn’t impressed with how clean, organized, and sophisticated our operation is. More importantly, they gain confidence in the quality and traceability of their parts. That’s because seeing our processes firsthand demonstrates the level of care and attention to detail behind every finish.

A Strengthened Supply Chain

A more transparent partnership helps reduce back-and-forth communication, prevent mistakes, and streamline the production cycle. When you understand how your metal finisher operates, you learn what information pertains to our processes. Steps like labeling critical surfaces and identifying masking requirements help us get the finish right the first time.

Learn Something New

Every customer who tours GMF tells us they learned something new about metal finishing and manufacturing, such as the science behind chemical conversion.
